Considering lip fillers? You're not alone! This aesthetic treatment has become a must-have in our Orlando office— it's an irresistible way to enhance lip volume, shape, and symmetry with lasting results.

Whether you're looking to add subtle definition or create a more dramatic pout, this is the ultimate guide with everything you need to know about your first lip filler treatment.

The Ultimate Guide To Your First Lip Filler Treatment

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers can increase lip volume, improve lip symmetry, define lip borders, and reduce the appearance of fine lines around the mouth.

The most popular hyaluronic acid cosmetic injectables we use for lips in our office are JUVÉDERM and Restylane Kysse. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body and is responsible for keeping the tissues hydrated and plumped.

Both JUVÉDERM and Restylane Kysse also stimulate collagen production, leading to an enhanced appearance around the lip area with minimized lip lines.

Both JUVÉDERM and Restylane Kysse contain lidocaine to reduce the discomfort of the injections, and both are long-lasting and FDA-approved.

While both contain hyaluronic acid, Restylane Kysse also contains BDDE, a crosslinker that helps form a structural network of HA within the tissues to help it last longer and enhance the color of the lips. Restylane Kysse can be slightly more expensive per injection than JUVÉDERM. The average longevity of JUVÉDERM is 6-12 months, vs. around 12 months for Restylane Kysse. JUVÉDERM results are seen immediately post-treatment. Restylane Kysse takes a few days to become apparent.

What Does A Lip Filler Treatment Look Like?

During your lip filler treatment, you can expect your injector to lead you through these steps during your appointment:

1. Consultation and discussing your goals

2. Facial mapping and marking injection points

3. Applying topical numbing cream

4. Careful injection of filler

5. Gentle massage to ensure even distribution

6. Initial assessment of results

With most lip filler treatments taking less than one hour, it's a short investment with a big payoff to your confidence!

Is Lip Filler Painful?

While the thought of needles near your lips might seem intimidating, most patients report minimal discomfort. During your appointment, your injector will prepare your lips with topical numbing creams, and many fillers contain lidocaine for additional comfort. Experienced practitioners use gentle techniques, and using ice before and after can reduce swelling.

Does Lip Filler Require Downtime?

Right after your treatment, you can expect slight swelling and potential bruising, sensitivity in the treated area, and temporary unevenness (this will settle). You can resume most regular activities with some basic aftercare observations in mind!

Some basic aftercare steps include:

- Apply ice to reduce swelling

- Avoid makeup for 24 hours

- Stay hydrated

- Avoid extreme temperatures

- Skip intense exercise for 24-48 hours

Are There Risks To Lip Filler?

Lip fillers are considered generally very safe. Like any treatment, they can have mild side effects, including bruising, swelling, asymmetry, rare allergic reactions, and in rare cases potential infection. Your injector will discuss how to prepare for your appointment and care for your lips afterward for the best possible results.

How Long Will Your Lip Filler Results Last?

Most hyaluronic acid lip fillers last 6-12 months, but individual results will vary based on metabolism, filler type, and other individual factors. Regular touch-ups can maintain your desired volume if needed.

Choosing the Right Aesthetic Injector

Your results heavily depend on your injector's skill. Look at your injector's certifications, experience in lip fillers, before and after photos, positive patient reviews, and that they operate in a clean facility.
